Energy prices contracted 3.2% in August, led by crude oil (-6.2%) and natural gas U.S. (-4.1%). Non-energy prices eased by 1.9%.

Metal prices dropped by 3.1%, led by iron ore (-6.5%), lead (-5.3%), and copper (-4.4%). Precious metals rose by 1.8%.

Volkswagen plans to use sustainable hemp-based leather for future car interiors

This collaboration aims to create a 100% bio-based leather alternative that is both sustainable and practical, with the potential to be integrated into Volkswagen models from 2028.

Future robotaxis from Waymo to drive themselves using fewer cameras

Waymo has revealed its new sixth-generation robotaxi with a sensor suite “optimised for greater performance at a significantly reduced cost, without compromising safety”. The robotaxi company Waymo says it wants its vehicles to drive around US cities with fewer cameras and radar sensors in future.

The next generation of vehicles and software will only need 13 cameras instead of the previous 29.

BYD to use Huawei's advanced autonomous driving system in off-road EVs

BYD's Fangchengbao brand will be the first to use Huawei's Qiankun intelligent driving system. Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD has signed an agreement with Huawei to use the Chinese tech conglomerate's advanced autonomous driving system in its off-road Fangchengbao EVs. The Bao 8 SUV under the Fangchengbao lineup will be the first BYD model to sport Huawei's Qiankun intelligent driving system and go on sale later this year.

European Commission approves 99.5 million Euro state aid measure for the Nokian Tyres factory in Oradea

The European Commission has approved, under EU State aid rules, a €99.5 million (RON 495.2 million) Romanian measure in favor of Nokian Tyres. Mercedes-Benz gets first international approval for Level 4 autonomous driving tests

BMW is successfully testing humanoid robots at Spartanburg Plant

BMW Group Plant Spartanburg and California robotics company Figure test the use of humanoid robots in production. During a trial run lasting several weeks at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, the latest humanoid robot, Figure 02 from California company Figure, successfully inserted sheet metal parts into specific fixtures, which were then assembled as part of the chassis. The robot must be particularly dexterous to complete this production step.

Nissan is trialing cool paint technology

Nissan has been trialing an innovative automotive paint aimed at helping lower a vehicle’s ambient cabin temperature in summer and reduce the energy usage of the air-conditioning system.

The paint is developed in partnership with Radi-Cool, a specialist in radiative cooling products and it incorporates metamaterial, synthetic composite materials with structures that exhibit properties not usually found in nature.
